Meet your coach
Hey there, I’m Dana!
I’m an NSCA-certified personal trainer with a passion for trad climbing. When I was first learning trad, I was so frustrated by slow progress that I took a job cleaning bathrooms in Yosemite so that I could figure out how to do more of what I loved.
Though I had lots of sport climbing experience, my early trad climbing days were a crash-course in building strength, technique, and confidence. Along the way, I had a spattering of trad mentors—some were encouraging and supportive, but others were gate-keepy, belittling, and exclusionary. I held on to the good ones and realized that I wanted to help build a better way to support new trad climbers.
Now, I’m excited to offer the coaching & training that I wish I had when I was starting out. You don’t need to leave everything behind and move to Yosemite like I did—you can accelerate your trad climbing from right where you’re at with personalized 1:1 coaching!
Most people think they need to move into a van if they ever hope to become a super-strong, ultra-confident trad climber.
But actually, with 1:1 strength training, headgame coaching, and goal-setting accountability, you can learn to push your limits in trad climbing from right where you’re at!
(though if you want to move into a van or get a job in Yosemite, I wouldn’t stop ya…)
1:1 climbing coaching is for you if…
You only lead trad climbs you know you can send
You know how to place gear, but you avoid trad whips like the plague
You’re ready to commit to a regular training routine for a minimum of 3 months
You have access to outdoor trad climbing at least once a month
1:1 climbing coaching is NOT for you if…
You love your comfort zone and plan to live in it forever
You’ve never led a trad climb before
You’re not willing to commit to training consistently
Maybe you’ve hired a guide to take you up a climb so you can practice your trad skills.
Maybe you’ve got a friend that’ll show you some things every so often.
Both of these relegate trad climbing to a background activity, where you’re dependent on others and can’t build the consistency required to actually get better.
In 12 weeks of 1:1 coaching, we’ll be able to build skills, strength, and confidence in a way that can’t happen on an isolated day out at the crag. With consistent programming focused on your trad goals, you’ll take trad climbing from feeling like an activity you do on vacation to something that’s actually integrated into your climbing life!

Got questions?

Because this is a fully-remote offering, I will not be coaching you on the specific mechanics of things like cam placements and building anchors. Taking an in-person course or hiring a guide is a great way to get started—please reach out if you’re looking for recommendations!

The training programs I design are fully customized for each athlete, so the short answer is that we can work with what you’ve got. However, ideally you’d have access to basic gym equipment (free weights and a pull-up bar at a minimum), as well as access to some sort of climbing-specific facility. Because this program is focused on trad climbing, you’ll get the most out of it if you’re able to climb outside at least once a month. If you’re not sure if your training environment is a good fit, please feel free to reach out and ask! I promise I’ll tell it to ya straight!

Short answer: hell no! Long answer: check out the blog post I wrote about this question and others.

It’s important that your training program is manageable amongst your other life commitments! Because all training programs are custom, we can work within the time you have available to train. As a general guideline, most training programs include 2-3 weekday workouts that take about 2 hours each, as well as one longer training day or outdoor climbing day on weekends. You should be ready to spend consistent time training each week, but we can make tweaks based on what’s realistic for you.

If you are not a trad climber at all, I appreciate that you made it this far down the page! I definitely work with sport climbers too. Book a call to get started so we can chat about your goals!

YES. Training on the road can be super hard to figure out by yourself--I've been there. If you're a traveling climber who wants to start training, I would love to work with you to build a plan to fit your circumstances and goals.
